How Live Baccarat Side Bets Work: A Beginner’s Guide

Live baccarat is already simple at its core: choose Player, Banker, or Tie, then wait to see which hand finishes closest to nine. Modern live tables, however, often surround those three familiar options with extra betting spots.

Understanding How Live Baccarat Side Bets Work makes those additional wagers far less confusing.

Side bets normally focus on something more specific than simply choosing the winning hand, such as whether the first two cards form a pair or whether one side wins by a large margin. They can offer bigger payouts, but usually come with very different probabilities.

What Is a Baccarat Side Bet?

A side bet is an additional wager placed alongside – or sometimes independently from – the main Player, Banker, or Tie bet.

It does not normally change the cards being dealt or baccarat’s standard third-card rules. Instead, the side wager checks whether a particular event happens during the same round.

Evolution’s standard Live Baccarat, for example, offers Player Pair and Banker Pair as default side bets, while optional configurations can include Player Bonus, Banker Bonus, Either Pair, and Perfect Pairs.

This is why two baccarat tables from the same provider can look similar but still offer slightly diffrent betting menus.

How Player Pair and Banker Pair Work

Pair bets are among the easiest side wagers to understand.

A Player Pair bet wins when the Player’s first two cards have the same rank. Two kings qualify, as do two fives or two aces. The suits do not need to match.

Banker Pair works in exactly the same way but checks the Banker’s first two cards.

Evolution states that its standard Player Pair and Banker Pair wagers pay 11:1 when the relevant first two cards form a pair.

Suppose the Player receives 8♣ and 8♥. A Player Pair wager wins regardless of whether Player eventually beats Banker in the main baccarat hand.

That independence is important: a side bet can win while your main wager loses, or vice versa.

What Is an Either Pair Bet?

Either Pair expands the pair concept.

Instead of choosing specifically between Player and Banker, you win if the first two cards on either hand form a pair.

This makes a winning event more common than betting on one particular side, but the payout is correspondingly lower.

One widely analysed version pays 5:1. With eight decks, Wizard of Odds calculates the probability of an Either Pair at roughly 14.38%, producing a house edge of about 13.71% under that paytable.

That comparison illustrates an important rule of side bets: a more frequent winning event does not automatically mean better mathematical value.

The paytable matters just as much as the probability.

How Perfect Pair Works

Perfect Pair is more demanding than an ordinary pair.

To qualify, the first two cards must normally match in both rank and suit. For example, two 7♠ cards from different decks form a Perfect Pair.

This is possible because live baccarat is usually played with multiple decks.

One analysed eight-deck version pays 25:1 for a qualifying Perfect Pair and carries a house edge of about 13.03%. Other versions award a much larger payout if both Player and Banker form Perfect Pairs in the same round.

Evolution notes that configurable Perfect Pair side bets can reach much higher payouts when both hands qualify, so the exact schedule should always be checked on the table you are playing.

Never assume every “Perfect Pair” button follows an identical paytable.

How Dragon Bonus or Player Bonus Works

Dragon Bonus is more complicated because it looks at how convincingly a hand wins.

Instead of simply predicting Player or Banker, you choose a side and may recieve progressively larger payouts when that side wins by a bigger margin. Natural wins with eight or nine can also qualify under common versions.

A traditional Player Dragon Bonus schedule pays more as the winning margin increases, with a nine-point victory paying substantially more than a four-point victory.

Under an eight-deck version analysed by Wizard of Odds, the Player Dragon Bonus has a house edge of about 2.65%, while the equivalent Banker Bonus is much higher at roughly 9.37%.

This is a good example of two side bets that look almost identical on the interface but have very different long-term mathematics.

What Is the Super 6 Side Bet?

Super 6 is normally associated with No Commission Baccarat.

In that baccarat variation, Banker wins generally avoid the standard commission, but a Banker victory with a total of six receives special treatment.

Evolution’s No Commission Baccarat includes a Super 6 side bet that wins when Banker finishes on six, with the published payout listed at 15:1. Pragmatic Play has also offered a Super 6 wager under similar conditions.

The important thing is not to confuse the Super 6 wager with the rules governing the main Banker bet.

They are seperate bets that happen to depend on the same final total.

Modern Baccarat Tables Add New Side Bets

Live baccarat side bets are no longer limited to pairs and Dragon Bonus.

Providers increasingly build entire variants around alternative wagers. Pragmatic Play’s Hi-Lo Baccarat, for example, adds Player and Banker Over/Under 5.5 wagers based on the final hand totals.

Its Amazing Baccarat introduced an Amazing 8s wager that wins when Player and Banker tie on eight. The provider lists a base payout of 55:1 before its Lucky Card multiplier system is applied.

These examples show why “baccarat side bets” is really a broad category rather than one standardized rule set.

Whenever you switch games, check what event actually triggers the payout.

Why Side Bets Usually Feel More Volatile

Side bets often target events that happen less frequently than a normal Player or Banker win.

That allows the table to display attractive payouts such as 11:1, 25:1, or even much more. However, those larger prizes come with more frequent losing rounds.

Perfect Pair is a clear example. In one eight-deck analysis, the qualifying event occurs only around 3.35% of the time.

A player can therefore go many rounds without seeing a successful result.

This does not mean a side bet is “due” after several losses. Each round follows the cards remaining in the shoe and the game’s rules, not a guarantee created by previous misses.

How Live Baccarat Side Bets Work becomes much easier once you identify the exact event behind each betting spot.

Pair wagers focus on matching ranks, Perfect Pair adds suit requirements, Dragon Bonus rewards particular winning margins, and Super 6 depends on a specific Banker result.

Before placing any side wager, read its paytable, compare the potential return, and treat the larger advertised payouts as compensation for less frequent winning events.
